What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the most secure way of moving file from one place to another on the internet for storage or to be used from other locations. This protocol is used to upload or download files.

An FTP site is like a large filing cabinet. This is where you would store File to be viewed or retrieved from remote locations
What do I need to have a FTP site?
You need to find a place that offers FTP hosting. Most (ISP) Internet service Providers offer such sites free of charge. DONOBi's provides customers with a standard connection account with us 10MB of space for Personal Web Page use.

What do I need to use this site?
You will need a FTP client like WS FTP pro or WS FTP Le. This client could be found at www.ipswitch.com. You can also search for FTP software at www.tucows.com
What is an FTP client?
FTP Client is software that is designed to transfer files back-and-forth between two computers over the Internet. It needs to be installed on your computer and can only be used with a live connection to the Internet.
How do I use the FTP client?
First you need a host address with a user name and password. Then open the program and it will ask for this information. Once you are logged in to the site, you select file from one side to the other. If you are uploading to the site or downloading from the site, The client is a drag and drop program and should be easy to use.
Can I view FTP site content from a remote location?
Most FTP sites can be viewed using a web browser like internet explorer (depending on how your provider has the account set up) It would appear like this: FTP://hostaddress.com/username/filename.html Contact site host for more details
How do I install a FTP client.
Once you find the client you want to use you should download it to your computer. Browse to the file and Double left click to execute the program. At that point, it should walk you through an installation process.
Why do I get a port error when I logon?
Make sure you set your FTP client to use passive FTP. Otherwise if you are running a firewall, make sure it is not blocking ports 80 for web traffic 25, for SMTP send mail, Port 110 for pop server used to get mail also 43 for IMAP mail server and port 21 for FTP.
I lost my FTP Username and/or Password! Will I loose my data?
No; the site is independent of the FTP client & the information should be still available remotely.
I lost my FTP Username and/or Password! How do I get them back?
Simply send an email, from the webmaster@ email address (or primarily email address in the case of a PWS) with the Subject Line FTP Password Request. Please include, in the body, a password you wish to use if we need to reset it. |
