What is a Personal Web Page?

How big is a 10Mb web page?
The size of a web page is very difficult to judge by content. A great deal of the size associated with a web page is contained in images. The more resolution (detail) an image holds, the larger the file will be. The compression format of the image (the extension) is also a determining factor when considering the size of a file.

1GB throughput is allocated to the Personal Web Pages.
Can I add more server space or bandwidth to the PWP?

When designing your site, you will most likely want to create an index page. The index page should be stored in a file with one of the following names:
and Possibly
The web server will search through for an index file in the order that they were listed here. If an index is found, then this is the first file that will be displayed when someone visits your site. Also, keep in mind that UNIX is case sensitive, which means that Index.html is not the same as index.html.
How do I create a Personal Web Page?
There are several methods used to create a web page in general. It is suggested that the novice use the less complicated methods like the Mozilla or Netscape “wysiwyg”.
Ok, what is a “wysiwyg”?
“wysiwyg” is ‘What You See Is What You Get’. It is a tool that, functionally, allows you to view the web page as it is being created. The Mozilla & Netscape tools are not the only wysiwygs available but, the most often used.
How do I get a “wysiwyg”?
You can download or purchase a “wysiwyg” from the internet.
What should I do after I have my wysiwyg?
Planning; Determine what the Goal of your personal page is. What information do you want it to convey. Keep in mind this is a Non-commercial space so, should never be used to sell anything or collect funds.
I have my site designed & uploaded; how do I make changes?
We first suggest you rename the old index to indexold or oldindex so that you have a back-up. Then open your HTML editor and direct it to the original file resident on the machine. Make your changes and save it as “index”.
Am I allowed to use a Guestbook on my PWP?
Yes, any third party Guestbook should work when linked properly from your PWP. DONOBi does not offer CGI support on PWP’s so, there is no ‘resident’ Guestbook.
How do I go about uploading my web site to the server?
Your site must be uploaded to the server using a program that is capable of using the FTP protocol. If you do not have an FTP program, you can obtain one for most operating systems from www.tucows.com. The FTP server address that you will need to use is homepages.donobi.net. Your login and password should be identical to the login and password for your primary account. Some FTP programs will also ask you to supply you with some additional information. In most cases, the defaults should be acceptable. Options such as the "remote path" should be left empty, and the host type should be set to "auto detect" or "UNIX."
What will be the address (URL) of my home page?
Your home page will be accessible through a number of different addresses:
http://<username>.home.donobi.net/
http://<username>.homepages.donobi.net/
http://homepages.donobi.net/<username>/ (preferred)
http://homepages.donobi.net/~<username>/
In most cases, the behavior will also be identical if a 'www' is added to the beginning of the address, e.g. http://www.<username>.home.donobi.net/
How long does it take for changesto the site to become visible?
All uploads are placed directly into the document root on your web site. This means that the changes should be available immediately once your upload has been completed. If you are still seeing an old version of your page, then your computer may still be "caching" (storing a local copy for quicker access) your site. In most cases, this problem can be alleviated by clearing your browser's cache/temporary internet files.
